Short answer. For a large classifieds or marketplace business, Besedo is the specialist most buyers start with. For very large multi country programs, TaskUs, Teleperformance and Concentrix have the headcount. For a US marketplace that needs a handful of reviewers trained on its own listing policy, with fraud review and a price visible before any call, a managed team like ours is the better fit. If all you need is an image check at upload, an API such as WebPurify, Hive or Sightengine is enough.
Why marketplace moderation is a different purchase
On a social app, a bad post is an embarrassment. On a marketplace, a bad listing takes money from a buyer. The FTC's 2024 data ranked online shopping as the second most reported fraud category in the United States, in a year when consumers reported losing $12.5 billion to fraud overall. Your buyers do not separate "the scammer" from "the site where I got scammed".
There is a legal side too. Since June 2023 the INFORM Consumers Act has required online marketplaces in the US to collect and verify identity, bank and contact details from high volume third party sellers (200 or more sales and $5,000 or more in revenue in a 12 month period) and to give buyers a clear way to report suspicious activity. Someone has to read those reports and act on them.
That changes what you are buying. A marketplace vendor needs to cover four surfaces:
- Listings. Prohibited and restricted items, counterfeits, prices that make no sense for the category, phone numbers hidden in photos.
- Sellers. New account checks, linked accounts, ban evasion.
- Messages. Requests to pay outside the platform, fake shipping notices, overpayment scams.
- Reviews. Fake, paid and retaliation reviews.
Most vendors are strong on one or two of these. The table shows which.
Content moderation companies for marketplaces compared
Details come from each company's public pages, checked in October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish pricing, the table says so and does not guess.
| Vendor | Type | Marketplace strength | Who reviews flagged items | Published pricing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Besedo | marketplace specialist, AI plus people | listing fraud, illegal items, off platform payment attempts | Besedo, your team or both | not published | large classifieds and marketplaces, many of them in Europe and Asia |
| WebPurify | API with human review add on | listing photos and text | WebPurify reviewers on a general policy | about 2 cents per image for live review | image checks at upload with light human backup |
| Hive | AI API | image, video and text classification | your own team | pay as you go from $0.50 per 1,000 text items and $3 per 1,000 images | engineering teams that staff their own queue |
| Sightengine | AI API | image checks including contact details and text in photos | your own team | $29 a month for 10,000 operations, $99 for 40,000 | small marketplaces automating photo checks |
| Checkstep | moderation software | policy engine, compliance reports | your own team | not published, demo first | marketplaces with reviewers on staff and EU reporting duties |
| TaskUs, Teleperformance, Concentrix | enterprise outsourcing | large review teams in many languages | vendor teams | not published | very large platforms with seat counts in the dozens or hundreds |
| Moderators | AI pre filter, dedicated moderators on your policy, QA, software | listings, sellers, messages and reviews with fraud context | our team, yours or both | software $199, $599 or $1,499 a month; managed team as a monthly retainer | US marketplaces that need two to twenty reviewers and a price before a call |
Marketplace specialists
Besedo has built its business on classifieds and marketplaces. Its marketplace page lists fraud and scam detection in listings, blocking illegal items at upload and spotting attempts to move payment off the platform, with AI and human moderation combined. It names eBay Kleinanzeigen, Marktplaats, Kaidee and Schibsted among its customers, and reports that the Swiss classifieds site Anibis automated 94 percent of its content decisions. That customer list tells you who Besedo is built for: high volume classifieds groups, many outside the US.
If that is you, Besedo belongs on the shortlist. If you are a US vertical marketplace with 5,000 new listings a day, expect an enterprise sales process and no public price to anchor on.
APIs with optional human review
WebPurify, Hive and Sightengine all score listing photos and text in milliseconds, and all three are priced so a small marketplace can start the same day. They are the right first layer. Nudity, weapons, drugs and embedded phone numbers get caught at upload for cents per thousand items.
The gap is fraud. An API sees one photo. It does not see that the same sofa was listed in four cities this morning by accounts created yesterday. WebPurify's human reviewers work a general policy and look at the item in front of them, not the seller behind it. If you go the API route, plan who on your side reads the flagged queue. Our pages on WebPurify alternatives, Sightengine alternatives and Hive moderation alternatives walk through the cost at different volumes.
Enterprise outsourcers
TaskUs, Teleperformance and Concentrix staff large trust and safety programs for global platforms, ecommerce included. You get language coverage, round the clock shifts and mature security controls. You also get seat minimums, multi month terms and a scoping phase before the first listing is reviewed. For a program of 50 seats that is reasonable. For five seats it is rarely offered. Our TaskUs alternatives comparison covers this group in more detail.
Managed teams sized for growing marketplaces
Our model sits between an API and a large outsourcer. An AI pre filter clears the obvious items. Dedicated moderators, trained on your listing policy and your own examples, review everything flagged with the context fraud needs: price against category, seller history, linked accounts and earlier reports. QA reviewers sample decisions every week, appeals from sellers go to a second moderator, and every action is logged with reviewer, rule and reason. The full scope is on our marketplace moderation services page.
The buying difference is that you see a number first. The plan builder at the top of this page turns daily listings, messages and reviews, languages and coverage hours into reviewers per shift and a monthly estimate. Teams start at two moderators and grow with volume. The method is on content moderation pricing.
How to choose a marketplace moderation vendor
- Count items per surface, not in total. 4,000 listings, 30,000 messages and 600 reviews a day are three different workloads. Vendors that quote on one blended number will be wrong on at least one.
- Send a fraud sample. Give each vendor 200 real listings with 20 known scams mixed in. Catch rate on that sample tells you more than any demo.
- Ask what the reviewer sees. If the answer is "the listing", fraud review will be weak. They need seller age, prior reports and linked accounts on the same screen.
- Check seller paperwork separately. Moderation vendors review content and behavior. Verifying licenses or insurance is a different job. Service marketplaces that require contractors to carry coverage usually handle it with certificate of insurance tracking next to the moderation queue.
- Get the weekend plan in writing. Scam listings spike on Friday evening and holiday weekends because fraudsters know when queues are thin.
- Agree on the report. Removals by reason, time to action by severity, QA score, seller appeal overturn rate, every week. Our marketplace fraud review checklist lists the signals worth tracking.
Questions marketplace teams ask before choosing
What is the best content moderation company for a marketplace?
It depends on volume and who reviews. Besedo is the best known marketplace specialist and fits large classifieds sites. Enterprise outsourcers such as TaskUs and Teleperformance fit very large programs. A US marketplace that needs two to ten reviewers on its own policy, with a price before a sales call, is usually better served by a managed team such as ours.
How much does marketplace content moderation cost?
API checks run from a fraction of a cent to a few cents per item: Sightengine starts at $29 a month for 10,000 operations and WebPurify quotes about 2 cents per image for live human review. Managed teams are billed per moderator hour or as a monthly retainer, and most outsourcing firms do not publish rates, so ask for a written figure at your daily volume. The content moderation outsourcing cost guide has worked examples.
Do marketplaces need human moderators or is AI enough?
AI is enough for clear cases such as nudity, weapons and banned keywords. Fraud is different. A fake rental or a counterfeit listing often looks fine on its own, and the signal is in the seller's history, the price against the category and linked accounts. Marketplaces with real money moving between strangers need people on the flagged queue.
What should a marketplace moderation vendor review?
At minimum listings (prohibited items, counterfeits, misleading titles, contact details in photos), seller accounts (new seller checks, linked accounts, ban evasion), buyer and seller messages (off platform payment requests, phishing links) and reviews (fake, paid and retaliation reviews). Ask the vendor which of these its people actually review and which are left to automation.
