Why platforms look for a Hive moderation alternative
Hive earned its reputation on detection. Its models cover images, video, text and audio, it has CSAM hash matching through child safety partners, and its dashboard lets a team work review queues. Engineers like it because it is fast to integrate and accurate on the classic categories: nudity, gore, weapons, drugs and hate symbols.
The search for an alternative usually starts somewhere else. A platform reaches the point where the API marks a steady share of uploads as uncertain, and someone has to look at every one of those items, every day, including weekends. That someone is not included. Hive's own positioning is that it suits teams that already have a human review process. If you do not, the API is half of the system you need.
The other triggers we hear from US buyers:
- Price visibility. Hive offers pay as you go developer access, but production volume is quoted through sales, which makes early budgeting hard.
- Policy fit. Your rules on swimwear in dating photos, replica goods on a marketplace or fan art on a creator site are not a model category. Someone has to apply them consistently.
- Reports and appeals. User reports, ban appeals and Digital Services Act statements of reasons need a person and a written reason, not a score.
- Context. Scams and grooming unfold across messages, profile edits and payment behavior. A per item classifier sees one piece at a time.
Hive moderation alternatives compared

| Vendor | What you buy | Published pricing | Who reviews flagged items | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hive | AI models plus review dashboard | developer pay as you go; enterprise by quote | your team | teams with reviewers already in place |
| Sightengine | AI API for images, video and text | $29 a month for 10,000 operations, $99 for 40,000, then $0.002 each | your team | startups that want self serve and clear pricing |
| WebPurify | profanity filter, AI image scoring, live human review per item | per item; live photo review listed around 2 cents an image | their moderators, item by item | image heavy apps with uneven volume |
| Besedo | moderation software plus managed moderators | by quote | their team or yours | marketplaces and classifieds |
| TaskUs | large BPO trust and safety teams | by quote, enterprise contracts | their team | very large platforms with big minimums |

AI API alternatives to Hive
If Hive does what you need and the only issue is price or integration style, stay in the API category. Sightengine is the most common swap for small and mid sized apps because the price list is public: $29 a month buys 10,000 operations and $99 buys 40,000, with extra operations at $0.002. One operation is one model check, so an image checked for nudity, weapons and text in image counts as more than one. Run your real mix through the free tier before you compare totals.
What does not change when you switch APIs is the review queue. Every API returns scores, you set thresholds, and items in the middle band still need a person. If that band is a few dozen items a day, a product manager can clear it. At a few thousand, it is a shift schedule. We wrote up how to size that team in how to size a content moderation team.
Alternatives that include human review
WebPurify is the closest alternative if you want someone else to look at images one at a time. You send items through the API and pay per item reviewed, with no minimums. It fits apps that upload in bursts, such as seasonal contests or a print shop, where a fixed team would sit idle. The limits show when decisions depend on your own policy or on context outside the image, and when reports and appeals still land on your staff. We compare the two models in detail on our WebPurify alternative page.
Managed teams that replace the whole stack
A managed moderation vendor runs the AI and the people. You hand over your policy and examples, the vendor builds a decision tree, staffs shifts by language, samples decisions for QA and handles reports and appeals inside an agreed SLA. Pricing is usually a monthly retainer sized by volume, languages and coverage hours.
The large BPOs, TaskUs among them, run this at enormous scale for the biggest social networks, usually with contract minimums that rule out a growing app. Besedo has long focused on marketplaces and pairs its software with moderators. Our service is built for US platforms between those points: an AI pre filter clears the obvious items, trained moderators work everything that needs judgment, and you see actions by type, response times and the weekly QA score in one report. If you want to keep your own reviewers, the same moderation software runs on its own from $199 a month with 100,000 AI scored items included.
You can also keep Hive. Your Hive integration can stay the detector and send its middle band to our queue by API. Nothing about your models has to change for people to start reviewing what they flag.
How to choose between Hive and its alternatives
Three questions settle most decisions:
- Who reviews the uncertain items today? If the answer is nobody, or an engineer after hours, buy people, not another model.
- How much of your risk sits outside single items? Dating, marketplace and chat products carry most of their risk in conversations and behavior. Image only checks will not cover it. See our pages on dating app moderation and marketplace moderation for what those queues look like.
- Who asks you for records? App store reviewers, payment processors and enterprise customers want to know how a decision was made. If the Digital Services Act already applies to you, it sits next to the rest of your obligations, and teams often track it in compliance management software along with privacy and security controls.
If two of the three point to people, price the human side before you price another API. The plan builder at the top of this page gives you the team per shift and a monthly estimate from five inputs.
Questions buyers ask about Hive alternatives
What is the best alternative to Hive Moderation?
For a pure AI API with published self serve pricing, Sightengine is the closest swap. For AI plus people who review items for you, WebPurify sells per item human review and managed vendors such as Moderators run a dedicated team on your policy. The right pick depends on who will staff your human review queue.
Does Hive Moderation include human moderators?
Hive provides AI models and a dashboard where your team works review queues and escalations. Staffing that queue is up to you, so most platforms pair Hive with in house reviewers or an outsourced team that works the items Hive marks as uncertain.
How much does Hive Moderation cost?
Hive offers pay as you go developer access priced per request and quotes enterprise contracts through sales. It does not publish a full price list for production volume, so ask for a written quote at your expected monthly volume and compare it with the per operation prices other APIs list publicly.
Is an AI moderation API enough on its own?
Rarely for a commercial platform. An API clears obvious items and flags the rest, but grey area content, user reports, appeals and scams spread across several messages need a trained person. Our comparison of human vs AI content moderation shows where each one fails.
